Golden Girls for Boys

The Golden Girls was a pretty important show for me. I’m sure this sounds odd coming from a guy in his mid-twenties, but it’s absolutely true. I have vivid memories of spending summer mornings from 11am until noon watching reruns while on the phone with a friend of mine, also male, laughing uncontrollably.

With the news today of Estelle Getty’s passing I thought it high time to run down the best moments from a truly hilarious show.

-“Mr. Burt Reynolds” – This comes from the episode “Ladies of the Evening” (Season 2, episode 2) wherein Blanche, Sophia and Dorothy get arrested for being prostitutes while on their way to see Burt Reynolds. Notable for two reasons. First the way Blanche always refers to him as “Mr. Burt Reynolds” which is really funny and second – what were they going to see Burt Reynolds do? They had tickets, but did he ever do a one man show?  Could it have just been a meet and greet? Some questions will never be answered.

-“The Case of the Libertine Bell” (Season 7 Episode 2) – The girls participate in a murder mystery weekend, which is great, but it is more notable for the fact that there is a tertiary character named Posey McGlynn.

-“Brother Can You Spare a Jacket” (Season 4 Episode 8) – Wherein our girls have put a winning lottery ticket in the pocket of an aviator jacket that Sophia gives to good will. They end up at the shelter and realize that there’s more to life than money when they see the sad lives the homeless lead. Notable for an unintentionally hilarious montage of homeless people scored, regrettably on the nose, with the song “Brother Can You Spare a Dime.”

-“Henny Penny – Straight No Chaser” (Season 6 Episode 26). The girls perform Henny Penny. It’s amazing. Bea Arthur is phenomenal. Just great. She’s really at home here.

-“Thanks For the Medicare” – From “Letter to Gorbachev” (Season 3 Episode 6). This is probably Estelle Getty's crowning moment on the series. See for yourself.

There are about a million more - Blanche's boudior photos, Baby the Pig, Enrique Mas, anything with Stanly, Big Daddy.  It was a great show. You should watch the reruns.

We’ll miss you Estelle.

That was great man i remember watching that show at my grandmas, there are so many pieces of that show in me it's hilarous. I liked the episode where they were crime fighters, did that happen?

I am the male Pat speaks of in this glorious passage, we would also call each other by the various writers and producers names of the show for example, i would call Pat Susan Harris and he would in turn call me Jamie Wooten , we were huge dicks

I liked all the episodes that they didn't end up in the kitchen eating cake at the end of it.
